Description: A professional nurse is accountable for the care of a group of patients. The Registered Nurse (RN) focuses on safe, effective patient and family-centered care, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes. The RN is responsible for assisting in maintaining a financially stable unit. The RN promotes personal development with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and education supported by a governance framework. The RN supervises licensed and non-licensed staff members. Applying the caring processes of the model of care, the RN has the responsibility to assess, develop, implement, and evaluate the plan of care. The RN focuses on patient and family comfort, education, and satisfaction. The RN applies educational and professional experiences in the delivery of quality care and mentoring/precepting staff.

Job Responsibilities: Performs assessments and reassessments per policy and procedure or as warranted by patient condition. Demonstrates the ability to make sound independent decisions. Initiates, prioritizes, and implements the plan of care and reviews and revises the plan as indicated. Collaborates with patient/family and interdisciplinary services. Utilizes resources appropriately to support the needs of the organization and patients/families. Monitors and documents response to clinical interventions. Facilitates, coordinates, provides, and evaluates education specific to patient/family needs and care provided during their stay and at discharge. Delegates tasks to licensed and non-licensed personnel. Functions as a mentor/preceptor and encourages teamwork. Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement. Participates in quality, safety, and service process improvement efforts. Implements practice changes and complies with regulatory standards. Participates in the governance model. Demonstrates knowledge about activities that facilitate collaboration. Participates in the development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities. Effectively uses communication systems to enhance care. Promotes cost-effective care. Gives feedback to co-workers. Is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment. Promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment for all. Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful information before communicating with others. Anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families. Develops relationships with families that promote their advocacy for the patient and their own needs. Collaborates with patients/families to prepare or update the plan of care. Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems. Reads journals containing studies or articles applicable to practice. Brings ideas and questions to the staff for assessment of applicability.
